Conary Talk:New Package Tutorial
From rPath Wiki
need to add information to the section "Set Up a Build Environment" that tells noob how to get cvc going... i.e. issue 'conary update conary-build --resolve'
ok, re-read that and it mentions it at the begining of the page. You might think about putting an additional refernce in anyhow for those of us who are challenged.....
- Thanks for the comments on the document, including the concern about conary-build. I'm trying to build the much-needed bridge between building one's first package and becoming a confident, experienced Conary packager, so it is important for me to receive notice of every additional consideration. I'm making the effort to address comments/considerations each time I create or revise a doc. So again, thanks! :-)

I think the tutorial on building a package was interesting but what is needed next is the next step.... i.e how to build someting slightly more complex. So maybe how to build something that seems basic like an http server with php and mysql + a custom home gown php app (that could be hello world in php). Thats a lot of steps but its the kind of thing that people are going to want to do. Kind of like jumping from hello world to something useful. The example needs to drive all the way down to builds and releases both on rbo and cmd line. Seems like a tall order but for guys like me who are decent app builders but not distro packagers it is necessary. I've instaled linux many many times but never bothered to care about a lot of stuff beyond rpm and yum. We want to deliver apps as an appliance but its a lot of understanding for us to come up to speed on. Wiki's are great but because of the unordered nature can sometimes be frustrating.
Keep up the good work. -c
I feel likewise that the next step is needed, and I'm excited to hear that people could really use it. Keep an eye on Conary:Develop a Package Recipe HOWTO in the meantime. Currently it links to some older docs used for understanding recipes, but the aim is to have a lower-level HOWTO dedicated to the next level of package building with some specific information on particular application types. As that page develops, particular requests or contributions are strongly encouraged! :-) -Stef
I would also suggest adding this to Category:Conary HOWTO and creating Category: Tutorial

- c, we have implemented these recommendations. Thanks for the feedback! --DerrickDevine 15:41, 23 May 2007 (EDT)
As a Note for future development on this page, I would like to point out that the "Setup Build Environment" portion of the tutorial has been recommended for removal and inclusion as a standalone page. In this revision of the page, I am leaving this portion until we can decide whether to integrate this portion into Appliance:Build_Environment or Conary:Build_Environment and use that as reference eliminating the need for this section in the tutorial (only requiring a link to the build tutorial). --DerrickDevine 15:41, 23 May 2007 (EDT)
