Question: When should I use a standalone Conary repository instead of rBuilder?

When should I use a standalone Conary repository?

When you simply want to distribute a piece of software intended to be installed on Conary-based systems, you can certainly just run a standalone Conary repository without involving rBuilder. This can be useful for software not intended to be turned into a software appliance or used in a derivative distribution.

When should I use rBuilder Online?

rBuilder Online is free for use by open-source projects--all projects on rBuilder Online are open and free for access, so it is suitable for most open-source projects that have few restrictions on distribution. rBuilder Online also provides several useful community-building tools, such as hosted mailing lists and project membership management. It is an ideal place to host and develop derivative distributions and open-source software appliances.

When should I use rBuilder Appliance?

When you are building a commercial software appliance or Linux distribution, or when the software you work with has restrictions on redistribution, you will need to use the rBuilder Appliance commercial project from rPath. rBuilder Appliance has many features to enable commercial distribution of software appliances, such as entitlements, which allow you to control and monitor distribution of your product to customers.
